WMD Modbox Mk2
Modbox MKII is a dual-LFO and multifunction utility module combining complex modulation, sample & hold, probabilistic sequencing, and analog noise generation in a compact and performance-oriented design. Building on the legacy of the original WMD/SSF Modbox, the MKII expands the concept with more depth, flexibility, and musical control.
At the heart of the module are two highly versatile LFOs — Three Phase LFO and Skew LFO — designed for everything from subtle movement to complex rhythmic modulation. They both support clock sync, reset, 1V/oct tracking, and audio-rate operation.
The Three Phase (3ɸ) LFO generates three interrelated outputs for evolving, rhythmic, and spatial modulation. This oscillator features three operating modes, selectable via the MODE button:
- Phase Offset (ɸ Δ) – All outputs run at the same frequency while SPREAD shifts the phase of OUT2 and OUT3 in opposite directions across 360°.
- Phase Modulation (ɸMOD) – Cascading phase distortion where OUT1 modulates OUT2, and OUT2 modulates OUT3, with SPREAD controlling modulation depth.
- Frequency Spread (𝑓 Δ) – SPREAD offsets the frequencies of OUT2 and OUT3 relative to OUT1, smoothly ranging up to 8x and down to 1/8x.
The waveform continuously morphs from saw → sine → triangle → ramp, while spread and ratio controls create everything from subtle movement to highly complex modulation structures.
The Skew LFO continuously morphs between saw, triangle, and ramp waveforms with adjustable curve shaping from exponential → linear → logarithmic. Intelligent sync and reset behavior make it especially powerful for tempo-locked modulation and rhythmic patching.
Modbox MKII also includes a digital Sample & Hold / Turing Machine section with integrated slew, track & hold mode, and a probabilistic 32-step Turing-style sequencer for evolving modulation patterns. Probability and loop length can be adjusted directly from the interface.
An integrated analog white noise source can be used to drive the Sample & Hold sectioni or as a modulation and audio source elsewhere in a patch.
Dedicated CLOCK and RESET inputs can independently or simultaneously control both LFOs, while synced operation provides musical clock divisions and multiplications across a wide range.
